Bonita

Event Start Date: 2022/08/11

2022/08/11

We experienced great water clarity most of the week with Bay water moving in the last few days.  The water temperature has fluctuated from 86 to 88. Bait has been plentiful most of the week. We had Bonita, Spanish Mackerel, Red Drum and a few Tarpon on the catch list. The pier population has slacked off as many schools have restarted.

Bonita have been the big story this week. Numerous fish have hit the deck every day. Many more took the anglers to school. They were lost due to cut lines on the pilings or just broken lines. Most fish averaged 10 pounds. They were hitting small: Alewives, Cigar minnows or Hardtails. I had the opportunity to hand off a couple of fish to visiting young anglers who had never fought a Bonita before. Andy, from Ohio handled his fish like a pro and landed it for his first Bonita. Two very young anglers shared another fight and were excited to see what they were fighting. Brenda, Sam, George and many more put several fish on the deck during the week.

Kings were MIA again, but Spanish Mackerel were caught in numbers we have not seen in many weeks. Early morning seemed to have the best bite and at least one angler caught his limit. They were hitting lures and natural bait. Allen and Carlos caught two of the bigger Spanish that were decked.

Tarpon and Tarpon anglers have slowed to a trickle. We are at the end of the migration, but a few are still coming through and eating. Kaleb S. hooked a nice one this week.

The shallow water is still producing Red Drum. Most of the fish are over slot and must be returned unharmed. One young angler from Texas got to catch a nice one while visiting. Landon and his family vacation here almost every year and spend a lot of time on the pier. Landon not only caught this nice Red but a few Bonita as well.
