Bonita Frenzy

Event Start Date: 2022/10/21

2022/10/21

Most of the week we had clean water but a couple of days it was dingy. Water temperature fell all week as a strong cold front moved in. We finished the week around 74 but had bottomed at 72.3 degrees early Wednesday morning. Bonita came in thick a couple of days. We had a few Kings, good numbers of Spanish and a few Red Drum. Bait has thinned considerably but you can still get enough to fish with.

The past couple of weeks have been an improvement in the King Mackerel bite. Over the past seven days we saw several hit the deck. The biggest was 20 pounds that I got Thursday on a Cigar minnow. Tommy also got a king Thursday. Then Monday, George and I lucked out and decked small fish that we caught on our bubble rigs with fluorocarbon leaders. On Tuesday I got an 11 pound fish on a live Alewife.

Spanish Mackerel are holding to their daylight and sunset bite pattern with sunset being the better bite. Most fish are small but legal with a few bigger fish in the mix. Brandon got one of the larger fish decked. The best combo was a bubble with a small 3 to4 inch jerk bait behind the leader.

Monday, we had a Bonita frenzy. The bite was consistent all day. I lost count how many Bonita hit the deck but it was over 50. The same rig that was hot for the Spanish worked very well on the Bonita.

Wednesday, I decided to fish the shallow water as the pier staff was pressure washing the end. Schools of Red Drum were cruising but slow to bite. There had been a few hooked before I started with one slot fish caught.  Then a couple more were hooked and lost to the pilings over the next couple of hours. I managed to get an upper slot fish that I invited to dinner. It was barely in the slot at 26.5 inches. Small live Pin fish and large Sand Fleas were the successful baits.
