Our water temperature rose quickly this week and hit 71 degrees. We have had a lot of green Bay water and some silty conditions. Small Spanish Mackerel have been caught all week. A few Pompano have hit the deck in the shallows. Squid are still plentiful in spite of the Spanish. The ice has been broken as the first Cobia was caught. A few large King Mackerel have been spotted and the Ballyhoo have started moving in. Things should be about to burst loose but rain and another cold front may delay that. The forecast doesn’t look promising.
The City got bragging rights for the first Cobia of the year. Sunday went into this year’s record book with Jeremy L. listed as the angler for the first Cobia. It tipped the scale at 27 pounds. Congratulations Jeremy and let the game begin.
Spanish Mackerel have been the main catch for this week. They have been plentiful but small. Most were barely legal but were caught in good numbers. The best bite was late in the afternoons but a few were decked through out the day. Mackerel rigs, Gotchas, bubble rigs and Sabikis got you a strike. Brenda brought her new neighbor out for his first time to pier fish. Fred wasn’t disappointed as he caught his first Spanish.
Steve M. takes the Pompano prize. He put a few in his cooler each time he came out. Fish Bite with either a Sand Flea or fresh Shrimp was the ticket. Harley put in his time teasing the Pomps and it finally paid off as he caught his first on the 12th.
Water temperature: 68-71
